Middleham Castle

Once the home of the young King Richard III, he spent several years at the castle under the care of the Earl of Warwick, Richard Nevill. Following Warwick's death at the battle of Barnet 1471 the castle was gifted to Richard by his brother Edward IV, and Richard made it his principal castle in the north.

Richard's son Prince Edward was born at the castle, but only ten years later died here, a year before his father also met his fate at the battle of Bosworth on 22 August 1485.

The present castle was predated by an earlier Norman motte and bailey structure of earth and timber, by some 400 years. The castle is clearly a ruin but it has decayed to this condition rather than being the subject of an attack, say in the Civil War.
